Brunei dollar replaced Malaya and British Borneo
dollar in 1967. The portrait of the then
Sultan, Omar Ali Saifuddin III is depicted on the observe. The reverse of the coins was designed by
Christopher Ironside.

20sen – local design with motif of a tree
50sen – coat of arms of Brunei
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III was the 28th
ruler and sultan of Brunei from 4 June 1950 until his abdication on 4 October
1967. His eldest son, Hassanal Bolkiah
succeeded to the throne as the Sultan of Brunei. Sultan
Omar Ali died on 7 September 1986 at the age of 71. He was remembered as the First Brunei Minister
of Defence, The Architect of Modern Brunei, The Royal Poet, The Father of
Independence, and the Father of Brunei’s Negara Zikir.
