Malaysia Commemorative Coins 2008 : St. John Ambulance Malaysia 100th Anniverary

Brief History

The modern St. John Ambulance started in Great Britain in 1877 when the Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to the organisation for its service to mankind. As the British Empire expanded in the late 19th century, so too did St. John Ambulance.

St. John Ambulance started in Malaya in 1908 by a group of medical officers who served in the Colonial Medical Service in the Federated Malay States (FMS) and Straits Settlements.

The organised St. John Ambulance Association (SJAA) started in 1935 in Singapore.   In 1937, SJAA in Malaya held its first Annual General Meeting.

From 1938, the British Administration in each of the Malay States established SJAB divisions in schools, government establishments and in the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR).

In 1941, the Government introduced the Medical Auxiliary Service and all SJAB members were automatically drafted into the service.

In 1972, SJAA and SJAB in Malaysia were amalgamated into one corporation known as the St. John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM), headed by a Commander-in-Chief under the St. John Ambulance of Malaysia (Incorporation) Act ( Act 74 ).

In 2008, St. John Ambulance celebrates its centenary in Malaysia. The organisation has come a long way with a present membership strength of over 60,000. Beside first aid, as its core activity, St. John Ambulance are is now involved in pre-hospital emergency medical ambulance service, haemodialysis service, home nursing and other humanitarian activities.
